Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy at Springwood Day Surgery

At Springwood Day Surgery, we offer colonoscopy procedures as a key part of our comprehensive digestive health services. Colonoscopy is a vital diagnostic tool that allows our gastroenterologists to closely examine the lining of your colon and rectum. This procedure is essential for screening for colorectal cancer, investigating intestinal signs and symptoms, and looking for and removing polyps.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that uses a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) equipped with a camera to view the entire colon and rectum. It can detect inflamed tissue, ulcers, and abnormal growths. The procedure is most commonly used for colorectal cancer screening and can also help diagnose causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding from the anus, and weight loss.

General Procedure & Information

Preparing for Your Procedure

Proper preparation is crucial for a successful colonoscopy. You will be given specific instructions on how to prepare, which typically include dietary restrictions and taking a bowel-cleaning solution. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure the clearest possible view of your colon.

What to Expect

Before the procedure, you’ll receive detailed information from our nursing staff about what to expect and how to prepare. You will also have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

During Your Colonoscopy

The Procedure

During a colonoscopy, you’ll be made as comfortable as possible. Sedation is typically used to minimise discomfort. The procedure itself usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Your doctor will carefully examine the lining of your colon and rectum, and if necessary, take biopsies or remove polyps for further analysis.

After Your Colonoscopy

Recovery and Results

After the procedure, you’ll be monitored in our recovery area until the effects of the sedation wear off. Most patients can go home the same day, but you will need someone to drive you. Your doctor will discuss preliminary results with you and follow up with any additional findings from biopsies.
